I had two inspirations for this one: lightning bolts, and the classic 90s Jazz design.
My initial approach was to create an array of lines (zags) made from smaller segments (zigs) that were offset from each other by a certain angle. With each successive segment there is a chance that a new line is generated orthogonal to the original line, with a smaller stroke size and different color. The segments got thinner and thinner as the line got longer.
I varied the initial angle of the lines, the length of their segments, their probability of creating a new line at any given segment, etc.
